Spotlight on Tenant Advocacy: Legal Win for Rent-Stabilized Residents in NYC
Special thanks to Ross Todd for highlighting our work in Litigation Daily’s “Litigator of the Week” column.
We’re honored that our partners, Lucas A. Ferrara and Roger Sachar, were recognized for their efforts in a landmark rent-stabilization case challenging unjustified rent hikes across hundreds of New York City apartments. Representing tenants in roughly 550 rent-stabilized units owned by a major New York City landlord, our team at Newman Ferrara pressed forward on behalf of those impacted by "aggressive" rental practices.
The Appellate Division, First Department, reversed a lower court’s denial of class certification—sending the case back for further proceedings. That ruling marks a crucial step toward collective accountability in housing law and reinforces the potential for tenants to pursue justice as a unified group.
This fight underscores the importance of strategic perseverance in the face of systemic resistance—and we’re proud to continue advancing equitable housing protections across New York.
