THIS UKRAINIAN GUY HELPED STEAL SOME $700 MILLION?

GOT 13 YEARS AND 7 MONTHS IN FEDERAL PRISON

For his role in a $700 million ransomware scheme, on May 1, YV (24), a Ukrainian national, was sentenced to 13 years and 7 months in prison and ordered to pay over $16 million in restitution for his involvement in over 2500 ransomware attacks across the world.

YV reportedly used ransomware known as “Sodinokibi/Revil” to infiltrate computer systems and to encrypt the data and lock the owners out. That attack was then followed by demands that substantial payments be made (via cryptocurrency, using cryptocurrency exchanges) or the data would be publicly released.

By way of a written press release, Attorney General Merrick B. Garland, noted that, “As this sentencing shows, the Justice Department is working with our international partners and using all tools at our disposal to identify cybercriminals, capture their illicit profits, and hold them accountable for their crimes.”

While Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco, added, “Deploying the REvil ransomware variant, the defendant reached out across the globe to demand hundreds of millions of dollars from U.S. victims …. But this case shows the Justice Department’s reach is also global—working with our international partners, we are bringing to justice those who target U.S. victims, and we are disrupting the broader cybercrime ecosystem.”

Think he had an attack after hearing that sentence?
