NEW VISIONS DEMOCRATIC CLUB MEETING
for a discussion on medical marijuana and New York City's drug policy
WHEN:
Thursday, February 9
8:00 PM
WHERE:
Jewish Center of Jackson Heights
Council Member Dromm has introduced a resolution that will be voted on next week by the Committee on Mental Health, Mental Retardation, Alcoholism, Drug Abuse & Disability Services. Passage of this bill will send a powerful message to Albany that our city and our state are ready to join sixteen states and the District of Columbia in legalizing medical marijuana.
It is time for the New York State Legislature to catch up to what a majority of New Yorkers already know: it is wrong to deny this palliative measure to patients who so desperately need it.
This bill is about valuing compassion over rigid bureaucracy. It is about prioritizing the health of our community members over the federal War on Drugs.
Our guest speaker that evening will be Evan Goldstein from the Drug Policy Alliance, the nation's leading organization promoting alternatives to current drug policy that are grounded in science, compassion, health and human rights. The New York office of the DPA works to promote sensible drug policies and to build a movement to end the drug war in New York City and State.
