Weight training might help people stop smoking. At the Miriam Hospital in Rhode Island, Joseph Ciccolo tested the idea on 25 smokers. All got smoking cessation training and nicotine patches, but some did twice-a-week resistance exercise for 12 weeks.

Ciccolo says the weights seemed to make a difference:

"Individuals at the three-month follow-up were twice as likely to quit smoking, in comparison to the control group." (7 seconds)

Ciccolo says they also lost weight, and fat, and gained muscle. And he says they had kept the quit-smoking advantage they had over the people who had not done the weight training.

The study in the journal Nicotine and Tobacco Research was supported by the National Institutes of Health.
