NEW YORK TIMES: "A Reputation for His Outspokenness" - 9/23/09 < http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/24/nyregion/24liu.html?_r=1 >

EXCERPT - He has won a diverse following of allies that helped propel him to within a breath of winning the city comptroller's race outright on Sept. 15.

"He has run a bunch of good hearings," Mr. Russianoff said. Mr. Liu strives, he said, "to get information out."

"He was able to bring together a lot of people and keep up the momentum," said Javier Valdes, deputy director of Make the Road.

"John has been an independent voice," said Councilman David I. Weprin, who endorsed Mr. Liu after running against him in the comptroller's race. "He's spoken up for what he believes in."

CRAIN'S NEW YORK: "Races tighten for public advocate, city comptroller" - 9/23/09 < http://www.crainsnewyork.com/article/20090923/FREE/909239995 >

EXCERPT - John Liu holds a slight lead over David Yassky in the primary runoff for city comptroller.

Just Wednesday morning, Mr. Liu won the endorsement of 32BJ SEIU, adding the politically-powerful building service workers union's effective ground game to his arsenal. An estimated 500 SEIU volunteers will knock on some 3,000 doors, pass out leaflets around the city and make phone calls urging members to vote.

"One energized neighborhood, one pitch that appeals to a given group--ethnic, ideological, you name it--can make the difference," Mr.

Carroll said.

Mr. Liu has the highest favorable/unfavorable ranking among the four runoff candidates.

MANHATTAN JEWISH SENTINEL - 9/23/09

EXCERPT - Having grown up in Flushing and attended the city's public schools, Liu has demonstrated as a two-term member of the City Council that success in downstate electoral politics is a matter of forging broad coalitions. He has been particularly attentive to his district's Jewish communities, where he has earned genuine popularity and support.

This is a tachlis program that shows Liu understands the scope of the comptroller's powers and what that office needs to do to keep New York City on track to recovery, growth and social equity.

JEWISH PRESS - 9/23/09

EXCERPT - We endorse Councilman John C. Liu for comptroller.

Keeping in mind the critical role played by the comptroller in such undertakings as the massive New York City public pension fund, it is to be noted that Mr. Liu, who holds a degree in mathematical physics, had an impressive reputation in the related profession of pension actuary.

Prior to his election to the City Council in 2001, Mr. Liu managed a team of actuaries working on the largest pension plans in the country at one of the world's leading accounting firms.

QUINNIPIAC UNIVERSITY POLL: "Liu Slightly Ahead In Comptroller Runoff, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds" - 9/23/09 < http://www.quinnipiac.edu/x1302.xml?ReleaseID=1375 >

EXCERPT - The Democratic primary runoff races for New York City Comptroller and Public Advocate remain close with City Council member John Liu slightly ahead in the Comptroller's race.

"Anything can happen in a tiny turn-out. One energized neighborhood, one pitch that appeals to a given group - ethnic, ideological, you name it - can make the difference. All we know today is that it's a little better to be Liu than to be Yassky." [Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute].

EL DIARIO LA PRENSA: "Editorial: A vote for John Liu" - 9/21/09 < http://www.impre.com/eldiariony/opinion/editorial/2009/9/21/a-vote-for-john-liu-149587-1.html >

EXCERPT - In less than two weeks, New Yorkers will decide whether Councilman John Liu or Councilman David Yassky should be the next city comptroller. We strongly encourage voters to choose Liu.

As comptroller, Liu would bring more energy and independence to the table than Yassky. He has actively questioned the numbers put forth by agencies like the MTA and the city's Department of Education and held them accountable for self-serving reports.

Liu is passionately committed to increasing opportunities for minority and women-owned businesses. His campaign has excited and mobilized Asian voters. But he also appeals to a broad range of New Yorkers.

Yassky also voted to back Mayor Bloomberg's undoing of term limits.

These acts are not those of a reformer who will hold government accountable.

New Yorkers must know that their comptroller will not simply fall in line with political agendas that concentrate power in the hands of a few. The choice is clear: John Liu for comptroller.
