FAMILY LEGACY AND CHINESE CUISINE WITH KATHY FANG

This week on Culinary Confidential, host Christina Cates heads west for a conversation with Chef Kathy Fang, the two-time Chopped champion, Food Network star, restaurateur, and author who has become one of San Francisco’s defining culinary voices.

Kathy Fang grew up inside the beautiful chaos of House of Nanking, the San Francisco landmark her parents opened in 1988. After training at Le Cordon Bleu, she returned to open Fang Restaurant in 2009 alongside her father, legendary Chef Peter Fang, where she serves as executive chef and co-owner. She is the star of Food Network’s Chef Dynasty: House of Fang and has appeared on Beat Bobby Flay, Guy’s Grocery Games, Cutthroat Kitchen, and Alex vs. America. Her honors include the 2023 TASTE Award for Breakout Foodie of the Year, a 2017 Ignite Award from The 1990 Institute, and recognition as one of the 2024 San Franciscans of the Year by the San Francisco Examiner. She has been featured on the cover of San Francisco magazine as the city’s “Culinary Queen” and is the author of Easy Asian Cookbook as well as co-author, with her father, of House of Nanking: Family Recipes from San Francisco’s Favorite Chinese Restaurant.

Christina Cates brings more than two decades inside New York hospitality to the microphone. A Restaurant Management graduate of The Art Institute of NYC, she rose through the ranks at some of the city’s most iconic rooms, serving as Assistant Restaurant Director at Tavern on the Green and later as General Manager at The Palm in Tribeca and Almond Tribeca. A lifelong foodie and traveler who now lives in Rutherford, New Jersey, she uses the show to explore the real stories, pressures, and people shaping restaurants, food culture, and hospitality today.

Their conversation covers what it means to grow up in a landmark restaurant, cook alongside a legendary parent, put a personal stamp on Chinese cuisine, and build something that is both deeply personal and commercially successful. Family dynamics, entrepreneurship, motherhood, and the constant evolution of the restaurant business are all on the table.
