KEVIN WALLS SCORES COVER OF VIEWTIES MAGAZINE

“I was terrified of playing Dale … I hadn’t even finished my training when I was offered the part, and I honestly didn’t think I was capable of doing it.” — Kevin Walls

Shot entirely in natural light on Scotland’s Isle of Skye, Happy as Larry is a dark comedy that explores the collision of despair and hope through two unlikely companions. The story follows Larry, a disillusioned novelist whose literary success stands in stark contrast to his bleak personal life. Planning one final solitary journey before ending it all, Larry’s retreat is unexpectedly disrupted by Dale—a relentlessly cheerful stranger whose presence forces him to confront his own despair. What begins as an awkward encounter evolves into a poignant meditation on mortality, friendship, and the strange ways people find meaning.

The film is written and directed by Hugo André, a London-based filmmaker known for emotionally rich narratives and a poetic visual style. André began his creative career in photography before transitioning to filmmaking with award-winning shorts such as Soul Forest and Blind Innocence. His debut feature, Makeup (2023), was praised for its intimate storytelling and nuanced performances. With Happy as Larry, André continues to explore themes of isolation, identity, and human connection, blending dry humor with lyrical imagery.

Produced by Lucas A. Ferrara—whose portfolio includes more than 175 award-winning films and shorts—Happy as Larry has already garnered significant recognition. It won the 2025 Audience Award for Best International Feature at the Dallas International Film Festival, and Hugo André’s screenplay has earned accolades across multiple festivals.

Kevin Walls, a BAFTA-winning sound designer, steps into the role of Dale with a performance that is raw, tender, and deeply human. His portrayal captures the quiet resilience of someone who chooses optimism not because it’s easy, but because it’s necessary. From behind the lens to the emotional core of the film, Walls’ transformation is a story of courage, vulnerability, and creative rebirth—now spotlighted on the cover of Viewties Magazine.

Founded and operated by Vanesa Miraglia, Viewties is known for its intimate storytelling and evocative visuals. In this latest issue, Miraglia’s words and Thomas Buchmann’s photography come together to illuminate Walls’ leap into acting, his fears, and the quiet triumph that followed.

“Taking that initial leap, agreeing to play the role, was the hardest part,” Kevin shares. “Once I got on set and completed the first day of filming, I was so glad that I took the leap.”

This issue of Viewties is more than a profile—it’s a tribute to creative courage. To the artists who risk, who stretch, who evolve. And to the storytellers like Vanesa Miraglia who make sure those leaps are seen, felt, and remembered.
