A POLICE CHIEF’S RECKONING, A SONGWRITER’S REVOLUTION

Coming up on AM970 radio this Sunday, November 9, from 7 to 9 PM Eastern, Shake It Off with Mert & Lucas, Live! welcomes two distinguished guests whose work has helped shape national conversations around justice and culture.

In the first hour, we’re joined once again by Chief Medaria “Rondo” Arradondo, former Chief of the Minneapolis Police Department and author of Chief Rondo: Securing Justice for the Murder of George Floyd. A fifth-generation Minnesotan of Colombian heritage, Arradondo began his career with the MPD in 1989 as a patrol officer and rose through the ranks to become the city’s first Black police chief in 2017. His tenure was marked by efforts to reform policing practices and rebuild community trust, particularly in the wake of George Floyd’s murder in 2020. Arradondo’s leadership during that pivotal moment earned national attention, and his decision to testify against former officer Derek Chauvin was seen as a landmark in police accountability. His book offers a deeply personal account of his journey through law enforcement and his commitment to justice and equity.

In the second hour, we welcome journalist and author Jane Eisner to discuss her latest biography, Carole King: She Made the Earth Move. Eisner brings decades of experience as a writer and editor, having served as editor-in-chief of The Forward and as a longtime journalist with The Philadelphia Inquirer. Her biography of Carole King, part of the Jewish Lives series from Yale University Press, traces the legendary singer-songwriter’s rise from Brooklyn’s Midwood neighborhood to global stardom. Eisner explores King’s prolific career, which includes over 75 million records sold and more than 100 charting songs, as well as her personal struggles and triumphs. The book offers fresh insight into King’s enduring influence on American music and culture, from her Brill Building hits to her Grammy-winning solo work and her later activism.

The show is hosted by Mert Roberts and Lucas A. Ferrara, a dynamic duo whose backgrounds bring both grit and gravitas to the mic.
