We’re delighted to announce that “Happy as Larry,” the latest dark comedy written and directed by Hugo Andre, has been officially accepted into Flickers’ Rhode Island International Film Festival. This marks an exciting moment for the film as it joins the ranks of one of the country’s most respected and influential showcases for independent cinema.
Founded in 1997, Flickers’ RIIFF has grown into New England’s largest film festival, drawing filmmakers and audiences from more than 60 countries. Known for its prestige and impact, it is an Academy Award, BAFTA, and Canadian Screen Awards qualifying event, and has helped launch the careers of countless emerging voices in film. The 2025 edition will take place from August 5th through August 10th, with screenings, red carpet galas, filmmaker Q&As, industry panels, and cultural tours taking place throughout Providence, Rhode Island.
“Happy as Larry” follows a disillusioned and weary author, who sets out on a final journey across the hauntingly beautiful landscape of the Isle of Skye with the intention of bringing his story—and his life—to a close. His solitude is disrupted by Dale, a relentlessly cheerful stranger whose presence leads to an unexpected bond. Through sharp dialogue and stunning visuals, the film explores the absurdity of life, the weight of personal choices, and the transformative power of human connection. With Calvin Crawley, Kevin Walls, Izzy Harradine, and Coral Sinclair in leading roles, the film brings together a talented ensemble cast that breathes life into its complex characters.
London-based writer and director Hugo Andre is recognized for his emotionally resonant storytelling and cinematic style. His previous work, including the acclaimed indie feature “Makeup” from 2023, showcased his ability to create deeply human narratives with intimate and poetic visuals. “Happy as Larry” continues in that tradition, offering a rich blend of humor, melancholy, and insight.
Audiences attending Flickers’ RIIFF 2025 will have the chance to experience “Happy as Larry” on the big screen. For those interested in tickets and screening details, additional information is available through the official festival website. More info here: https://film-festival.org/
“Happy as Larry” invites viewers into a story that is both whimsical and profound—a celebration of the quirks, contradictions, and connections that define us all.
