Air Vent Inc. has issued a recall for electric motors used in gable- and roof-mounted attic fans due to a fire hazard. The affected motors, distributed between August 2003 and December 2013, may contain a faulty safety cutoff that can lead to short circuits and potential fires during operation.
Approximately 2.9 million units are impacted by this recall. The motors were sold through various retailers and wholesalers nationwide, including ABC Supply, Lowe’s, and Beacon, both in-store and online. Prices ranged from $74 to $92.
The recalled motors can be identified by a specific vent pattern on the motor end bell: two long vents followed by two short vents, aligned on the outer ring. Only motors with this pattern are subject to the recall.
Consumers are urged to stop using the affected attic fan motors immediately and contact Air Vent to request a refund. To initiate the process, consumers must submit photos of the motor and complete an online verification form. Once confirmed, a refund will be issued.
Air Vent has received 159 reports of overheating incidents involving burning or fire. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported.
For more information, consumers can reach Air Vent toll-free at 877-247-4878, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET, or visit powermaxmotorrecall.expertinquiry.com or gibraltarbuildingproducts.com and click on “Important Safety Information.”
These motors were manufactured in China and distributed by Air Vent Inc., based in Dallas, Texas.
