THOUGHT HE WAS COMMUNICATING WITH A RUSSIAN AGENT
In late April, JSD (32) of Colorado Springs was sentenced to 262 in prison for “attempted espionage” for transmitted classified National Defense Information to a person he believed to be a Russian agent.
From June 6 to July 1, 2022, JSD is alleged to have transmitted via encrypted email documents which had been classified as “Top Secret/Sensitive Compartmented Information” to a party he thought was a Russian agent. (In actuality, the person was an undercover FBI agent.)
JSD admitted that he willfully transmitted files and knew that the “information would be used to injure the United States and to benefit Russia.’
In a written statement, Attorney General Merrick B. Garland noted, “This defendant, who had sworn an oath to defend our country, believed he was selling classified national security information to a Russian agent, when in fact, he was outing himself to the FBI …. This sentence demonstrates that that those who seek to betray our country will be held accountable for their crimes. I am grateful to the FBI Denver and Washington Field Offices for their extraordinary work on this case.”
Was his spying an open secret?
