INTO ROASTED COXCOMBS?

THEIR ROASTED CHICKEN WASN'T JUICY OR SAVORY HERE

There we were, at SIXTY VINES, a chain restaurant which has a location near the Boca Raton Marriott at Boca Center – 5050 Town Center Circle – and just about every dish we had sampled, thus far, was a miss.

Yet, a guest insisted that we stay and try the “CRESTE DI GALLO — roasted chicken, mushrooms, spinach, oven-dried tomato, pesto cream” ($17)

We found the dish’s name somewhat unusual, as it’s Italian for “coxcombs” — which refers to that fleshy growth you see on top of a rooster’s head. While commonly red in color, you may see them in other variations, like black or dark purple, depending on the breed of the bird. And while it’s used to attract mates, since chickens don’t “sweat,” this part of their anatomy also helps the creature to cool down as its blood circulates.

We could have used some cooling down after all the disappointing dishes, and this one (unfortunately) was no exception. When cooked correctly, this offering should be juicy and impart a savory flavor. We found it overcooked, dry, and thought the ratio of the coating to the chicken was all off; tasted too bready.

Since it was far from im-peck-able, it rated a lowly C-; points shy of an F.

Having had enough, we opted not to stay for dessert. I guess you could say, we chickened out ….
