We were on the hunt for some reasonably priced Italian fare in Fort Lauderdale, when some friends suggested we head to a place called PIZZA CRAFT, located at 330 Himmarshee Street. According to its website, it’s a “cozy Italian restaurant, serving old school Italian specialties and award-wining wood fired-pizzas (Barstool rated 8.1).”
▫️
Around the time we visited, TripAdvisor ranked the place #251 out of 839 FLL restaurants, with its scores at 41% excellent, 21% very good, 12% average, 4% poor, and 9% terrible. Since some 62% of diners thought it was very good (or better), we thought we’d pay the place a visit.
▫️
We began with “NONNA’S MEATBALLS – whipped ricotta, torn basil” ($13 pre-tax/tip), which our server claimed solely consisted of beef.
▫️
Now Michelin-star chef Antonio Salvatore makes his version of this dish using a mixture of minced veal, beef and pork, to which he adds “day-old bread,” egg, cheese (pecorino or parmesan), milk, salt/pepper, parsley or basil, garlic powder, olive oil, onion, white or red wine, tomato puree, carrot, and celery stalk. And just from that ingredient list, you can tell his meatballs probably pack a nice punch. But the only punch we got here was of bread and salt; which overwhelmed what could have been a potentially stronger item.
▫️
Given that disappointment, and the $16.25 all-in cost (post-tax/tip), this dish ultimately rated a “C.”
▫️
Unless you’re a meatball, I’d pass on this ….
