EEOC TEAMS UP AGAINST THE TEAMSTERS

SEXUAL HARASSMENT COST TEAMSTERS LOCAL UNION #455 SOME $85,000

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) recently announced that it had settled a sexual harassment lawsuit filed against Teamsters Local Union #455 – a labor union with locations in Denver and Fort Morgan, Colorado – for $85,000,

Apparently, during a meeting, the union’s male business agent sexually harassed a female UPS manager and later pleaded guilty to criminal charges which arose from his misconduct.

Believing that the Local had failed to implement about safeguards, the EEOC filed suit in the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission v. Teamsters Local Union #455, Civil Action No.: 1:22-cv-2520-DDD-KLM), claiming a violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

In addition to the monetary payment, the Union has agreed to modify its policies, provide training, and will post informational flyers about workplace sexual harassment at its Colorado (Local #455) locations.

In a written statement, Regional Attorney Mary Jo O’Neill of the EEOC’s Phoenix District Office noted, “We are pleased that Teamsters Local #455 has agreed to these remedial steps to heighten awareness about sexual harassment, inform staff and members of their rights, and, we hope, avoid such incidents in the future.”

Did the Teamsters take one for the team, there?
