BAE'S GLITCHY KIMCHI FRIED RICE

Dale Talde, a “Top Chef” contestant, who had a bunch of restaurants in New York and New Jersey, supposedly loves to whip up some Kimchi Fried Rice because it’s a relatively simple thing to make, with most of the ingredients usually sitting in your fridge and pantry. His recipe calls for chopped onions, minced garlic, kimchi, day-old cooked rice, sliced scallions, Korean (or red pepper) chili flakes, sesame oil and egg. (Spam (optional)).

So, there we were, dining at Bae Korean Grill — an “upscale Korean barbecue dining experience featuring state-of-the-art Shinpo grill tables,” at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, 5711 Seminole Way, Hollywood, Florida — and while it was a nicely appointed space, we weren’t having the best dining experience. Because our Wagyu Dumplings, (reviewed the other day), were a total bust, we were desperately looking for something “filling” and decided we would go with their “Kimchi Fried Rice — bacon, green onions, egg, sesame seeds” ($22, pre-tax and tip).
▫️
Even though we thought the rice was slightly gritty, and a bit unpleasant to chew, we didn’t find the flavor combinations objectionable. A guest remarked that it was a “passable” dish, and that sort of captured the essence of our meal. But significant points were also lost because the notion of paying $27+, (after tax and tip), for some leftover rice was irksome to us.
▫️
So, it should come as no surprise that this dish ultimately landed a “C-.” Even though it wasn’t terrible, I’d wok away from this item if I were you.
▫️
How does that old Carpenters’ song go? “Grainy days and Mondays always get me down ….”
