DUNE'S WELL-ROUNDED FLAT-BREAD

It was a beautiful day, so friends wanted to go to DUNE by Laurent Tourondel, an oceanside restaurant at the base of Auberge Beach Residences & Spa —2200 N Ocean Blvd (Fort Lauderdale).

To be totally honest, we have visited this location multiple times before, and our experiences were far from stellar. So, I insisted that we only go for the “Happy Hour.”

To that end, DUNE now offers a special menu from 4-6 pm, Monday thru Saturday. In addition to an array of food offerings from $8-14, you can order craft well cocktails (such as Beluga Vodka, Spring 44 Gin, Libelula Tequila, Dewar’s Scotch, Bicardi Rum and Jim Beam) for $9, “Sommelier selected” wines for $8, or enjoy domestic, imported, and local beers for $5.

We started with the “Tomato-Buratta [sic] Flatbread — San Marzano tomato, olives, basil, oregano, parmesan” ($8). Many chefs prefer this tomato because it is low in acidity and brings a sweet flavor to any dish (largely due to the volcanic soil from which this “fruit” is harvested). Burrata, on the other hand, is a form of mozzarella cheese which has a softer and more flavorful core, that’s filled with stringy curd and fresh cream. It’s often incredibly rich and flavorful.

The combination of these two flavors worked so exceptionally well that the item was quickly devoured.

While the amazing beachfront view scored a coveted “A,” the pizza wasn’t as stellar – but it still landed a not-too-shabby “B+.” Points were lost because the crust was a bit thinner (and limper) than we would have preferred, but this dish otherwise popped. We enjoyed this item, and think you will too (particularly at $8, before tax/tip).

Ironically, I guess you could say, this flat-bread was pretty well-rounded.
