GALATA'S SPINACH PIDE

Did you know that spinach – “Spinacia oleracea” – a leafy-green edible flowering plant belongs to the “goosefoot family” of vegetables, which includes beets and Swiss chard? (Apparently, they are so named because the leaves are said to look like the feet of waterfowl.)
▫️
A native of Persia – now known as modern-day Iran -- food historians believe spinach was introduced to China in the 7th Century, to Europe in the 12th Century, and to the US around 1806. (And that explains why, to this very day, the Chinese call the vegetable “the Persian Green.”)
▫️
Many people enjoy this this vegetable because it’s an excellent source of fiber, vitamins A, C, K, and minerals such as iron, folate and potassium. So, with that in mind, when I saw the SPINACH PIDE – spinach, onions, feta cheese ($16.95) – on the menu at GALATA, I thought we should give it a go.
▫️
Now don’t underestimate this informal, “100% Halal,” “Kebab & Pide House,” located 1350 South Pompano Parkway, in Pompano Beach (Florida). While it doesn’t have the fanciest décor, and is more of a diner (than a fine-dining) experience, we still managed to enjoy our food selections, particularly the MUSHROOM PIDE -- mushroom, mozzarella cheese ($14.95) – which we reviewed just the other day.
▫️
As we previously noted, this “Turkish pizza” or flatbread comes in the form of a “boat-shaped” oval, with the edges of the dough folded inward so as to nestle its ingredients. And much like the other dish we had sampled, this item was also quite good -- with the vegetables and cheese offering a silky, rich, tangy (and slighty salty) taste. We couldn’t stop devouring it.
▫️
Once again, even though points were deducted for the gruffness of the service (we had to go to the counter to request our selections), this pide also scored a pretty respectable B+, and can commend it to you.
▫️
While it ain’t the greatest thing since sliced bread, we certainly had a blast breaking bread at GALATA.
