ROOFTOP @ EXCHANGE PLACE: LEMON MASCARPONE FRENCH TOAST

The last thing we wanted to do on a beautiful summer day was eat indoors, so we headed on over to Jersey City (New Jersey), to hang out at the “RoofTop at Exchange Place.”

Before we get to the food, let’s start off by praising this place’s spectacular views of lower Manhattan. (That, alone, is worth the price of admission.) But, if you’re hungry, or looking for a good place to eat, you should consider going elsewhere.

At our waitress’s prompting, we ordered the ”Lemon Mascarpone Stuffed French Toast” — Peach Compote, Toasted Almonds — ($16).

Typically, the recipe calls for lemon zest and mascarpone to be stuffed into thick white-bread slices, dipped in batter, pan fried, and smothered in a fruit sauce. If you think that combination will make for a “heavy” dish, well, you’d be right; it most certainly was. And the overpowering, lemony taste made each bite exceedingly unpleasant. (The flavor was almost as intense as sucking on a lemon ....)

Because it lacked “balance,” and the compote did nothing to help improve this clumsy dish, an “F” was its ultimate score.
