Because of New York City’s public financing rules, even a small contribution to Bill de Blasio’s re-election campaign can go a very long way. In fact, it seems at times that this campaign is a case study on why the law is so important. Consider this:
* Powerful special interests have already spent an obscene amount of money on television attacking the mayor.
* One of our Republican opponents has already given his own campaign almost two millions dollars, and has spent even more than that.
* And, of course, Donald Trump has given the New York Republican Party a clear directive this year: beat Bill de Blasio.
All of that would normally be difficult to overcome — but because of NYC’s six-to-one match on small-dollar donations, even a campaign like ours that receives the vast majority of its contributions from lots of people giving small donations can thrive.
Bill de Blasio came to office to fight for families who stay up at night wondering how they'll make ends meet, and that’s just what he’s done. But what we are proving in this election is that our public financing program in New York City can be a critical tool in redistributing political power in our city from powerful interests to regular people. That’s why your small-dollar, matchable contribution is so important.
