Lucas: Last week, President Trump made one of the most serious mistakes to date in what has already been a gaffe-riddled, mistake-filled presidency. Going against both science and common sense, he announced he would withdraw the United States from the Paris climate agreement.
He did so despite the fact that climate change is widely viewed as the single greatest threat to humanity and that Americans support staying in the agreement by better than a 2:1 margin.
Trump's action signaled to the 194 other countries that are parties to the Paris agreement that the United States cannot be trusted to keep its word. His actions are an abdication of our role as a world leader, and now align the United States with Syria and Nicaragua as the only countries in the world not participating in the historic agreement. And, most importantly, the President’s actions in this matter threaten to do long-term damage to our planet, our economy and our national security.
That's why I’m fighting back – for the sake of our children and our children's children. And that is why I hope I can count on you, Lucas, to do the same.
We need to act quickly and do everything in our power to curb climate change
right now, before it is too late. It is time to Insist, Resist and Persist.
Thank you so much,
