Governor Cuomo Announces Completion of $11.8 Million "Gateway to Syracuse"
Project Completed on Budget Three Months Ahead of ScheduleNew Interchange Designed to Improve Safety and Traffic Flow of Major Roadways
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo recently announced the completion of the $11.8
million "Gateway to Syracuse" Interchange 36 replacement project
three months ahead of schedule. The Central New York project incorporates
a complete replacement of the old overpass connecting I-81 with the New
York State Thruway with a new bridge that will serve as a safe, long-lasting
direct link between the two major transportation arteries in New York
State. The project complements the state’s record $27 billion investment
in roads and bridges, primarily in Upstate New York.
"The new Gateway to Syracuse is a shining example of the remarkable
work that is being done to improve infrastructure across Upstate New York,"
said Governor Cuomo. "New York is renowned for our innovative infrastructure design, and
this is one of many projects that will ensure safe and reliable travel
for our motorists."
The new overpass is a three lane bridge that includes two lanes from the
Thruway (I-90) eastbound ramp to Interstate 81 and one lane from Interstate
81 to the Thruway (I-90) eastbound. The replacement bridge and ramps were
designed to last long-term, reduce congestion, and create safer road conditions
for motorists. This project was completed in accordance with Governor
Cuomo's "Drivers First" initiative, which prioritizes the
convenience of motorists to ensure that disruptions are minimal to drivers
at highway and bridge work zones across the state.
Thruway Authority and Canal Corporation Chair Onondaga County Executive
Joanie Mahoney said, "Governor Cuomo continues to show his dedication and commitment to
the development of Central New York. The Interchange 36 replacement project
is a direct result of the cooperation between Onondaga County and New
York State and will improve safety and strengthen the reliability of our
roadways and help spur economic activity."
Thruway Authority Acting Executive Director Bill Finch said, "The Thruway Authority is dedicated to providing the safest and most
reliable roadway for our motorists, and the expedited completion of the
"Gateway to Syracuse" project truly reflects that commitment.
The hard work and innovation that went into this project was critical
to its completion three months ahead of schedule, and this new interchange
36 will create easier access to the Thruway and other vital transportation
arteries throughout central New York."
State Senator John A. DeFrancisco said, "The Interchange 36 replacement project is an important example of
how investing in our infrastructure improves the public’s safety,
while helping to create jobs and move our economy forward. I am pleased
that construction was completed ahead of schedule as this "Gateway
to Syracuse" serves each day as a critical route for thousands of
commuters, who live and work in the Central New York community."
State Senator David J. Valesky said, "Motorists will now experience enhanced travel conditions thanks
to the successful completion of the Gateway to Syracuse interchange."
Assemblyman
William Magnarelli said, "I commend the Thruway Authority for completing this project three
months early. The Thruway and Interstate 81 are both vital to Central
New York's economy and roadway infrastructure. These vital infrastructure
improvements will ensure an orderly flow of traffic at this key interchange."
Assemblywoman Pamela Hunter said, "Central New York is a crossroads at the heart of our state. Upgrades
like this new interchange are critical because they keep us connected
to the broader economy."
The contractor for this project, Cold Spring Construction Co. of Akron,
NY, was able to use an on-site batch plant to produce concrete, which
allowed for a consistent, high-quality mix and aided in significantly
reducing the timeline for construction. The new design of Interchange
36 features a two-span, continuous steel plate girder bridge with a concrete
deck. The metalized weathering steel girders provide a durable bridge
that requires minimal maintenance throughout its lifespan.
