Young people across the world are engaged in some extraordinary work for
social change. One of the most remarkable is Malala Yousafzai, whose story
of courage has become a spark for global activism for girls education.
Here in Brooklyn, a group of young women (including my daughter Rosa)
have been inspired to action by that spark.
They can't believe that over 60 million girls around the world don't
have the chance to go to school. So a few years ago, they started organizing the
Girls Read for Girls read-a-thon. Girls & boys from grades K - 8 get together to read, recruit sponsors,
and raise money for
The Malala Fund. The money raised helps to empower girls through education, raise awareness
of gender equity issues, and inspire young people to make change in their
communities. Last year, over 125 young people participated, and they raised $18,000.
This year, they hope to do even more. So I hope you'll join me in
supporting the 5th annual Girls Read for Girls read-a-thon:
