Lucas,
It is almost Thanksgiving – a time to reflect on the year past and to give thanks. These thoughts were in my mind yesterday when I had the honor of attending the Presidential Medal of Freedom ceremony at the White House. A number of deserving individuals received one of our nation’s highest civilian honors for their work to advance our nation, including my friend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
Kareem clearly left his mark on the sports world, but his life’s work has gone far beyond the basketball court. He has been a fierce advocate for social justice, service to community, and education reform. He is a quiet and humble man, but one with a strong and eloquent voice who is on the frontline of so many worthy causes.
It was an honor for me and my wife, Kasey, to stand with Kareem when the President recognized him, and I hope Kareem continues his good work to help people find peace and understanding at a time when it is needed more than ever. There’s a reason these awards are given out this time of year, as they give us a way to not just honor, but to thank these individuals for their contributions to our country.
I’m thankful we have leaders like Kareem who help bring people together so we grow together. I'm also thankful we are continuing to honor and celebrate the diversity in our neighborhoods and communities. And I'm thankful to know so many people who are dedicated to continuing to fight to make this country a better place.
Rest assured I will continue to do my part to make a difference and improve the lives of hard-working Americans. In the meantime, I hope you and your loved ones have a safe, relaxing, and wonderful Thanksgiving holiday.
All the best,
Joe Crowley
