As Puerto Rico's $72B public debt has decimated the island's schools, health care, and other public services, millions of Puerto Ricans are suffering the consequences from severe cuts. Each month last year, 11,000 Puerto Ricans migrated to the US mainland. Meanwhile, decision makers in the US federal government are proposing solutions that favor investors' profits over families' basic needs and the economic future of Puerto Rico.
To begin building a strong movement to support the people of Puerto Rico on the island and in the mainland, we invite you to a one-day event to become more informed, share strategies and plan actions. Topics for discussion include:
- Workers and the Economic Crisis
- Political Power, New Migration
- Public Education and Higher Ed
- Veteran's Issues and Health Care
It's time for our communities, labor and the grassroots to raise our voices to stand with our Puerto Rican brothers and sisters!
Sponsored by 32BJ SEIU; Make the Road Action Fund; UAW Region 9A; NYC Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO; DC37, AFSCME; NYS AFL-CIO; CFLR; NYCC; Hedge Clippers; 1199SEIU; Campaign for Fair Latino Representation; the New York Chapter of the National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC) and other labor, community, and progressive groups in support of Puerto Rico.
