Lucas,
They encourage, inspire, and, at times, push us beyond the bounds of what we think is possible.
Educators like the ones at St. Lawrence University -- and so many other fine institutions in the North Country -- are on the front lines of opportunity. [A]s I spoke with professors and faculty, I heard how their jobs have become even harder in a changing economy. And I listened to students detail the burden of soaring tuition costs.
Growing up in Peru and attending high school in Plattsburgh, I became who I am today because of a quality education. It started with teachers who motivated me to never stop asking questions. I then went on to West Point, where I studied history, and met my wife of 28 years. Later, when Kathy and I taught there at West Point, we learned firsthand the difficulty and satisfaction that comes with sharing knowledge.
When I look at the North Country today, I see students who need leaders who will prioritize the opportunities that helped my generation succeed.
That’s why I support early childhood education to give every child a fighting chance to reach higher education, whether it be college or vocational training. And it's why in Congress, I will be a stalwart advocate for our region's colleges and universities, fighting to make college more affordable and to attract talented students and faculty.
I'm thinking of the educators from pre-K through higher education who dedicate their lives to this craft. To the teachers who stay late after class, who pay for supplies for their own classrooms, and get by with less and less each year, thank you for all you do.
Thank you,
Mike Derrick
