For more than 80 years, Social Security has made a promise to our seniors: After a lifetime of hard work, they’ll be able to retire with peace of mind.
This program is critical, now more than ever: A report I issued as ranking Democrat on the Joint Economic Committee showed two-thirds of seniors rely on Social Security for more than 50% of their income. The program is especially essential for women, who are more likely to be in poverty without Social Security benefits.

Right-wing threats to Social Security are nothing new. Republicans tried to block the program when it was first proposed, and since then they’ve launched attack after attack on Social Security, from slashing benefits to privatization.
