Boxer Praises Formation Of U.S. Advisory Council On Human Trafficking

Senator Boxer Introduced Bill to Create the First-Ever Council of Trafficking Survivors

Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) applauded the formation of the United States Advisory Council on Human Trafficking. During a meeting of the President’s Interagency Task Force to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons, Valerie Jarrett introduced the newly appointed members of the Council. President Obama previously announced their appointment on December 16, 2015.

In January 2013, Senator Boxer introduced a bill to establish the U.S. Advisory Council on Human Trafficking to review Federal Government policy on human trafficking. The legislation was included in the Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act of 2015 that President Obama signed into law in May 2015.

“The Advisory Council will play a critical role in addressing human trafficking and protecting those at risk of becoming victims,” Senator Boxer said. “We must listen to the voices of survivors who have lived through this nightmare and whose insights will help us end these heinous crimes.”

The Council is made up of survivors of human trafficking who will provide advice and recommendations to the U.S. Government to strengthen U.S. federal policy and responses to combat human trafficking and provide support for survivors.
