Lucas,
Seven years ago, the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act was signed into law.
Even though it's now easier for women to find out if they're being
paid less than a man for doing the same job, the simple truth is that women
are still being paid less than men for doing the same job.
You know the statistics: Women overall make 79 cents for every dollar
a man makes, 60 cents for African American women, and 55 cents for Latinas.
That's why today, I'm asking you to add your name if you're
ready to continue the fight for equal pay.
The work we take on for equality is fought on a lot of fronts. We fight
for a woman's right to make her own health care choices, to choose
if and when she has a child, and for equal representation in elected office
from state legislatures to Congress.
The women we help elect are no different.
Lilly Ledbetter was brave enough to take what she knew was wrong —
the fact that she'd been making less than her male colleagues for
nearly 20 years at Goodyear Tire — and go through a dizzying number
of court battles to make sure it wouldn't happen to others.
A number of our EMILY's List women like Senators Barbara Mikulski
and Patty Murray then took her story to Congress and worked to get the
Act over the finish line.
But we know there is more work to do. If you believe women should be paid
the same as men for doing the same work, then it's time to speak up
and support the incredible candidates we've endorsed this year who
will continue our fight.
Say you're ready to be part of ending gender paycheck discrimination
once and for all:
