SIDESTEPPING THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE

Lucas, Hillary Clinton is the second Democrat in our lifetimes to win the popular vote and lose the White House.

Al Gore won the popular vote in 2000 by more than 500,000 votes. Hillary Clinton currently leads Donald Trump by more than 1.2 million. With millions of ballots left to be counted—mostly from blue state California—she could end up winning by more than 2 million votes. And she'll still have lost the White House because Donald Trump narrowly won a few Midwestern states.

The Electoral College has got to go. While we cannot abolish it without a constitutional amendment, there is a remarkable way we can effectively make an end run around it without one.

Daily Kos is launching a major long-term project to make an end-run around the Electoral College and elect the president by national popular vote. Can you chip in $3 to support the campaign today?

Here's how we do it:

The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact is an agreement among several U.S. states and the District of Columbia to award all their respective electoral votes to whichever presidential candidate wins the overall popular vote. Once states totaling 270 electoral votes join the compact—which only requires passing state laws—then the next presidential election will be determined by the popular vote, not the Electoral College.

As of November 9, 2016, 10 states and the District of Columbia have signed the compact, totaling 165 electoral votes. So, we are already over 60% of the way there. To get enough states on board to reach 270 Electoral Votes by 2020, we need to launch major state-by-state campaigns pressuring state legislators and governors to join the NPVIC. Our top targets are states with Democratic legislatures and governors that haven't yet signed on, like Connecticut, Delaware, and Oregon.

Daily Kos has already collected 1.25 million signatures in support of the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact. Now, we need the resources to begin targeting and pressuring state legislatures and governors.

Please chip in $3 to make an end-run around the Electoral College, and elect the president by national popular vote.

Keep fighting,
Michael Langenmayr, Daily Kos
