Dog fighting is a shockingly brutal form of animal cruelty that occurs
in every part of the country and every type of community. One would think
that those convicted of this heinous act would serve significant time
behind bars…but sadly, that's not always the case.
Due to tragically outdated sentencing guidelines,
only about half of all convicted animal-fighters see any jail time at all—and those who do are, on average, sentenced to a mere
six months. This heartbreaking oversight is part of the reason the ASPCA works so
hard to bring awareness to dog fighting, and to rescue and rehabilitate
its victims. It's also why we created National Dog Fighting Awareness
Day, which we will celebrate for the third year this April.
But defeating dog fighting—and enforcing proper punishment for its
perpetrators—is not something we can do by ourselves. That's
where you come in:
The more voices on our side, the greater the chance we stand at achieving
justice for animals.
When you join the ASPCA by making a gift today, you will become a part
of our nationwide movement to protect innocent animals who fall victim
to dog fighters and abusers. Just this month, nearly 50,000 vocal animal-lovers
responded to our call to action by telling the U.S. Sentencing Commission
to strengthen animal fighting sentences.
This kind of work can make a real and lasting impact for animals, but it can only be accomplished when we all work together.
If you're ready to make a difference for victims of dog fighting and
other forms of animal cruelty,
join the ASPCA by making a gift today. Together, we can give them the justice they deserve.
