Dear Lucas,
You may already know that our brothers and sisters in Puerto Rico are
facing the country’s largest economic and fiscal debt crisis in
history. Puerto Rico’s leaders are being forced to decide between
repaying debts to rapacious lenders or providing the most basic, and necessary,
services to their community.
Congress can and should take action to help- demand action now.
The people of Puerto Rico are struggling with enormous tax hikes and the
cutting of service. The resulting outmigration is further threatening
the stability of the commonwealth’s communities.
This crisis and its outcome will affect more than simply the Puerto Rican
economy and the nearly 4 million U.S. citizens that currently reside on
the island. The 5 million Puerto Rican-Americans who live within the 50
states and the collective Hispanic-American population of this country
will be affected as well.
The stakes are too high for Congress to sit idly by doing nothing. Puerto Rico and its residents are part of America. Stability can be achieved
and Congress can help. Whether through debt restructuring, market oversight,
revaluation of trade restrictions or a combination of various solutions,
helping Puerto Rico achieve and maintain stability isn’t just what’s
best for everyone, it’s the right thing to do.
It’s time to come together with our neighbor and overcome this fight
hand-in-hand.
Join me in asking Congress to help Puerto Rico.
Thanks,
Keith L. T. Wright
