Subsidies for oil companies may have made sense once. If I were in Congress
back in 1916, when we started subsidizing oil companies, I may have supported
the idea. It’s reasonable to help emerging technologies until they
can compete in the marketplace on their own.
Of course if I were in Congress in 1916, I’d also be wearing a top
hat and carrying a cane.
Oil isn’t an “emerging technology” anymore. It’s
a huge industry, raking in billions of dollars in profit every year. Big
Oil companies compete just fine on their own.
Taxpayers shouldn’t be forking over billions of dollars in subsidies
and tax breaks to Big Oil companies. If you agree, sign this petition
and call for an end to Big Oil subsidies.
There are plenty of things we could do with the billions of dollars we’re
giving to Big Oil companies.
We could use it to invest in technologies that are actually emerging now
-- like clean energy technology. We could use it to invest in our infrastructure
and get our roads, bridges, and tunnels in shape. We could use it to pay
down the deficit.
But giving special tax treatment to oil companies -- the biggest of which made
$177,000 a minute in 2013 -- isn’t an effective use of taxpayer money.
Big Oil is doing great 100 years later. It’s time for us to cut
the cord.

Don’t get me wrong -- I love a good top hat. But it’s a fashion
statement best left in the past. And Big Oil subsidies should go the same way.
Thanks for adding your name.
