Lucas –
In the summer of 1969, uprisings at The Stonewall Inn in Greenwich, New York, sparked the modern American struggle for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality. That summer, at that tavern, men and women who felt oppressed became emboldened to fight for their rights.
And each victory we’ve celebrated since – from repealing “Don’t
Ask, Don’t Tell” to bringing marriage equality to all 50 states
– has come only because we stand on the shoulders of those brave
individuals.
That’s why I’m advocating that The Stonewall Inn be designated
our nation’s first national monument honoring LGBT history.
Look around our country today, and you’ll see celebrations of women’s rights and civil rights – the time has come to give the LGBT equality movement the recognition it deserves. If you agree, will you add your name in support?
Over the years, Stonewall has become synonymous with the American struggle for LGBT civil rights. Of course, there’s more work to do in this fight – same-sex couples still don’t have the same adoption rights or the same federal benefits.
By designating The Stonewall Inn a national monument, we can commit to seeing this fight through for all the individuals who were brave enough to stand up at that Greenwich tavern and rightfully ingrain their stories in our national narrative.
Will you join me in adding your name in support?
