Republicans have a stranglehold on state legislatures, and they used their power to draw congressional district lines after the last census to turn purple states like Florida, Ohio, and Pennsylvania into bases of power for the GOP. That's how a state like Virginia—which Obama won with a majority of the vote in both 2008 and 2012—ended up with a congressional delegation of three Democrats and 11 Republicans.
Any plan for long-term progressive change has to start at the state and local level: That's why we're focusing on electing Democrats to state legislatures now. We can't afford to wait until 2020.
Virginia Democrats are just one seat away from the majority in the state Senate. They're in a deeper hole in the House, but every race we win there this year puts us one seat closer to winning long-term.
