THE FIGHT FOR EQUALITY AIN'T OVER

How far we’ve come, Lucas.

Nineteen years ago, I was one of just 67 members of the U.S. House of Representatives to vote against the so-called “Defense of Marriage Act.”

I said DOMA would institutionalize discrimination against our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters. That’s exactly what it did. And, last year, the Supreme Court agreed – striking down DOMA as unconstitutional.

The Supreme Court [recently] heard arguments in a case that could make marriage equality the law of the land in a matter of weeks. We don’t know yet how the justices will rule, but I’m optimistic.

Standing up for LGBT rights was not a “winning issue” in 1996. But that didn’t stop us from keeping up the fight for equality. I knew that, in time, the public, the politicians, and our laws would catch up with what is right.

Our country has made incredible progress in recent years. Sometimes it feels like it happened overnight. But it didn’t. This historic change is the result of decades of activism and outreach.

We’ve come a long way. But the fight for full equality isn’t over. We need you to keep up the pressure.

Thank you for staying involved, Lucas!
