READY TO RUN?

We’re just [days] away from the 8th Annual Brooklyn PTA 5K run/walk. Join us Saturday, May 9 in Prospect Park for a spring day of students and parents running, and school communities coming together to support one another. You can learn more about the event at BrooklynPTA.org or register for the race directly here.

Be sure to spread the word in your school community about this important and fun spring event:

Brooklyn PTA 5K Run/Walk

Number Pickup begins at 8:45 AM
Bartel-Pritchard Square, Prospect Park

I’m especially excited this year that additional partners are helping to make this the biggest PTA 5K event yet. For the second year, Councilmembers Laurie Cumbo, Stephen Levin and Carlos Menchaca are co-sponsors of the event. This year we’ll be joined by Borough President Eric Adams and State Senator Jesse Hamilton as well. All are terrific supporters of our local schools, and I thank them for their help in spreading the word and drawing additional funds for our PTAs.

It is the spirit of collaboration that makes the PTA 5K event stand-out. Schools from throughout Brooklyn (and even a few from Manhattan) participate, and the list keeps growing. In the past couple years, we’ve also seen another level of partnership in which schools with well-honed PTA fund-raising operations have reached out to schools with greater need to work together to raise funds for where they are most needed. And I must give a special thanks to our sponsoring school, PS 107, for their deep involvement in making this event a success.

For those that are registered, we will send information next week about early bib pick-up and other logistics. If you aren’t planning to run but would like to support the event, please contact us for volunteer opportunities or to make a direct donation. Email PTArunfortheschools@gmail.com for more information.

We’re also spreading the word about an upcoming opportunity for high school students who want to learn more about civic engagement, employment and internship opportunities, and enrichment programs for young adults. Co-sponsored by Community Board 6, the Red Hook Initiative, Good Shepherd Services, Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson, and New York Methodist Hospital, this event will feature speakers, workshops, and an opportunity expo. High school students: bring your resumes, aspirations, and questions.

Together, we keep our schools strong. Thanks for being part of a Brooklyn-wide school community. I look forward to seeing you at the race.
