UNVEILING MICHAEL MILLER

Join the New York County Lawyers’ Association on Thursday, April 30, 2015 at 5:30 p.m., as we unveil a portrait of Michael Miller, President of NYCLA from 2002 to 2004 .

Key initiatives under Mr. Miller’s leadership included major conferences and efforts to study and reform the Housing, Criminal and Family Courts. Mr. Miller led NYCLA to become the first major bar association in the United States to endorse full equal civil marriage rights for same-sex couples. Additionally, Mr. Miller led NYCLA’s successful effort to persuade the American Bar Association and the New York State Bar Association to adopt a policy calling for the mandatory videotaping of all custodial interrogations. Critically important to NYCLA’s continued vitality and relevance, Mr. Miller established a Task Force on the Future, which resulted in the restructuring of the Association, a major capital campaign and ultimately, NYCLA’s first operating surplus in many years. Also, NYCLA’s annual Law & Literature Award and its annual joint award with the Metropolitan Black Bar Association of the Ida. B. Wells-Barnett Justice Award were both established under Mr. Miller’s leadership.

Active in the organized bar at the state and national levels, Mr. Miller is Vice-President Elect of the New York State Bar Association from the 1st Judicial District, was Chair of the New York State Conference of Bar Leaders, and has been a member of the House of Delegates of both the New York State Bar Association and the American Bar Association. Mr. Miller has a long and diverse commitment to pro bono activities both locally and in the international arena. Mr. Miller helped develop and coordinate award winning pro bono programs at NYCLA, served as an Election Supervisor in Bosnia shortly after the Dayton Accords, interviewed Kosovo refugees for evidence of war crimes, and in the mid-1990’s, he created and hosted NYCLA’s public education cable T.V. program, “Legal Forum.”

Among many awards, Mr. Miller is recipient of the American Bar Association’s 2002 Pro Bono Publico Award, its highest award for pro bono service, in recognition of his leading role in the legal relief efforts in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks.

Help celebrate NYCLA’s accomplishments during Mr. Miller’s presidency by registering to attend today!
