Lucas,
Educating our children is the most important collective investment we make as a country.
This year we celebrate the 50 th anniversary of the Elementary & Secondary Education Act and Head Start – two landmark laws that have helped make America a more equal and prosperous nation.
Head Start – launched 50 years ago this week – is so much more than an early-education program. It gives children from modest-income families a safe place to learn, play, explore, eat a healthy meal, and receive regular medical checkups.
Year after year, Republicans in Congress have sought to slash Head Start. This year, they passed a budget that cuts Head Start by $19 billion. They lump it in with “wasteful spending.” But they’re wrong. Head Start is an invaluable investment that pays dividends to our country – giving our children the tools they need to succeed in school and life.
The odds are stacked against us in this Congress, but I’m going to keep fighting to fully fund Head Start, expand universal preschool programs, and invest in our K-12 schools. We owe it to the next generation and the hardworking teachers who are making-do with smaller budgets and bigger class sizes.
Thank you for staying in this fight with me!
Xavier
