Lucas,
As the 114th Congress gets underway, Congressman Hakeem Jeffries is being recognized as a leader who stands up for our progressive values. The newly-elected Whip for the Congressional Black Caucus, Hakeem was appointed to serve on committees that are battlegrounds for so many issues important to working and middle class Americans.
Contribute today to support Hakeem Jeffries' leadership.
This week, Hakeem was appointed to the Education and Workforce Committee. It'll be the arena for debates about securing a living wage, implementing the Common Core standards, and advancing President Obama's proposals for free community college. Congressman Jeffries will fight to close the education gap and provide graduates with good-paying jobs.
Hakeem will also continue to serve on the Judiciary Committee, weighing in on comprehensive immigration legislation and continuing his leadership on criminal justice reform. The next two years offer an important opportunity to make a difference for millions of DREAMers and other immigrants making important contributions to American society. Hakeem and his colleagues will push back against odious anti-immigrant legislation and expose GOP insensitivity on the issue. The Judiciary Committee will also offer Hakeem a fantastic platform to advance progressive solutions to reform police departments and rebuild trust between law enforcement and communities of color.
Hakeem is an emerging leader in the House of Representatives. This year, Nancy Pelosi appointed him to be a member of the influential Steering and Policy Committee and as one of twelve House Democrats to be part of the communications team. These roles present Hakeem with further opportunity to advance policies that help working families and the middle class.
But he can't enact those policies on his own. We need to elect progressive Democrats across the country who will stand alongside Hakeem in Congress. He's on the front lines of preventing the Tea Party from turning back the clock, but we're going to need to step it up. We can't afford to let an extreme agenda dominate the policy landscape and set us back any further.
Thank you,
Jeffries for Congress
