We’re approaching the fifth anniversary of Citizens United , a ruling that deserves residence in the Dumpster of Bad Ideas (but hasn’t gotten there yet). Almost five years into the Citizens United era, it’s useful for us to take a step back and think about what’s happened.
I know I talk about Citizens United a lot. A LOT. And there have undoubtedly been at least a few instances when I’ve talked about Citizens United in an email that you received but were slammed that day and never opened. It’s ok, I completely understand -- I don’t take it personally. But the point is, I probably talk about it even more than you realize.
I keep bringing it up because it’s truly that important. Citizens United threw open the floodgates for the unprecedented spending we’ve seen in our elections ever since. And the worst part is - we know that special-interest money is distorting and destroying the democratic process. And it’s got to stop.
If you have a minute, I hope you’ll take a look at a blog post I’ve written. Citizens United ’s anniversary is on January 21st, but it’s one anniversary I won’t be celebrating.
Thanks,
Al
