Lucas,
I want to introduce you to six courageous, passionate women you'll
undoubtedly be hearing from for years to come.
These women are in the running for EMILY's List's Gabrielle Giffords
Rising Star award, which recognizes a young pro-choice Democratic woman
serving in state or local office who has a promising career in public
service ahead of her.
They are courageous women who have dedicated their lives to improving
their communities — and the world. Which is why I need your help
choosing the winner. (There's even a nominee from New York!)
Will you read a little about each of them here, and then cast your vote
for who you think should be the next Rising Star?
One of them was the first African American elected as chair of her state's
Democratic Party. Another was the first openly gay woman to lead a state
legislative chamber. And they all believe in the power of public service
to change the world and make people's lives better.
I would be happy to see any of these women become the 2015 Rising Star,
but this award is about this community and the leaders who inspire you.
