Lucas,
We’ve all gotten a little used to hearing Donald Trump say disgusting,
degrading, and deplorable things on television. It seems to be the basis
for his entire campaign.
But his latest call for “a total and complete shutdown of Muslims
entering the United States” is too far.
We are a nation built on inclusion -- a place for those fleeing oppression
and persecution.
I am an Italian American. My family’s background reads like a map
of Italy, with grandparents and great-grandparents born in Abruzzi, Venice,
Genoa, Campobasso, and Sicily. My husband Paul’s father was born
in Potenza and his mother was born in Tuscany.
What it would have been like for me if, when those ancestors came to America
to build a better life, they faced a “complete and total shutdown”?
What would have happened to the millions upon millions of American families
whose parents and grandparents came from somewhere else?
Trump’s proposition is a betrayal of our Constitution and to who
we are as a nation. It violates our shared values, and it strengthens ISIS and insults the
patriotism of millions of Muslim Americans.
This kind of ignorant, toxic, hate-filled language has no place in American
public discourse. Help me send a message to Donald Trump: We will NOT
stand for this. Add your name today.
Thank you.
Nancy
