My name is Dakota Wenig...
and I am a part of the NYC Walk Volunteer Committee. Like many of you,
my Walk story is a family story. I walk for my mom, Marsha. For my whole
life, my mother has been a confident, creative, charismatic, and beautifully
brilliant woman. She is the perfect example of someone who embraces all
life has to offer and encourages others to do the same. In 2012, at the
young age of 58, my mother was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s
after my family and our friends had noticed things were slowly changing
about her. She is still charismatic and full of love, but she has lost
a little of her shine, confidence and energy. The fact that my children
won’t know this wonderful woman how I did, because this disease
stole it from her early on, hurts my heart. I decided to join the NYC
Chapter as a committee member so I can help spread awareness and raise
funds in the hopes that eventually people can stop going through the pain
that is losing a loved one to this terrible disease. As her shine diminishes,
my fight grows stronger.
Why do I Walk?
I walk in hope for a cure.
I walk to raise awareness.
I walk to support others facing the same heartbreak.
I walk for all caregivers.
I walk to let everyone know they are not in this alone.
…I walk to support the Alzheimer’s Association in their fight
to end this epidemic.
Please join me and thousands of New Yorkers who are walking together in Riverside Park on Sunday, October 18th to End Alzheimer's. Together, we can do our part to carry the mission forward. I'll see you there.
