You probably know my story by this point. What you may not know is my motivation
for overcoming the challenges I’ve faced. And the answer is completely
unsurprising:
Family.
Before I ran for State Senate, before I went to law school, before I even started taking night classes at Tarrant County College -- I was blessed with a beautiful daughter but only had a low-wage job to support us. All I wanted to do was make life better for our family. So when the opportunity to get an education came along, I jumped at the chance.
That’s the simple answer -- and it’s not unique to me. Millions of Texas families share similar stories. They face similar struggles as the ones I’ve faced in my life.
All they need is the opportunity to grow and succeed. I think they should have it.

My work in public life has always been based on stories from real Texans.
I’ve heard so many stories, for example, from the victims of sexual assault. Some were forced to travel to multiple hospitals to find proper care. Others couldn’t get justice because the rape kits collected in their cases were sitting on shelves. So I fought for survivors -- and my solutions passed.
I’m proud to fight for all Texas families. So when I hear stories like those, I go to work. It’s the way elected leaders should behave. And it’s the attitude I want to bring to Austin.
