With almost 4 years in office as attorney general, Eric Schneiderman has proven himself a steadfast champion of progressive causes, and he has gained widespread recognition for the far-ranging reform efforts he has pursued. Eric's leading role in the nationwide investigation of misconduct in the mortgage industry led President Obama to appoint him co-chair of the Residential Mortgage-Backed Securities Working Group at the Justice Department, a new joint investigation into the abuses that led to the bubble and crash of the US housing market. Among his many accomplishments in office, he achieved a key legislative victory when the state legislature unanimously passed a bill to overhaul the state's prescription-tracking system, which will make it more difficult for addicts and others to stockpile narcotics. He has proposed new disclosure rules that require political nonprofits to report campaign contributions in New York State and local elections, as well as filed a legal challenge to the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and successfully defended New York's marriage equality statute in court to ensure that all New York couples receive equal protection under the law. He is also leading the fight for New Yorkers' health, safety, and environmental protection by challenging the Indian Point nuclear power plant's practices related to high-level radioactive waste storage, earthquake preparedness, and fire safety.
