The 2010 Citizens United ruling left the door wide open for billionaires, special interest groups and corporations to try to buy election results and trample the voices of everyday Americans.
Finally, we can all have a voice in overturning it.
With less than six months to go before Election Day, I am joining other lawmakers to back a constitutional amendment to end Citizens United and bring transparency to the election process.
In the 2012 election cycle, outside spending skyrocketed beyond $1 billion, and the 2014 cycle is forecasted to blow away previous midterm records. The billionaire Koch brothers' network alone is outspending Democrats 10-to-1.
Clearly, this amendment is long overdue, and our timing is crucial, but we cannot push it forward unless you help us build grassroots momentum. Will you add your voice?
From the beginning, increasing transparency in government has been one of my highest priorities, which is why I chose to disclose my daily schedule and personal financial reports.
I see ending Citizens United as an essential step toward opening up our government and necessary to cutting back on the negative campaigning that has become a scourge on our elections and eroded the public's faith in Washington.
In the end, this is not just about money. It is not about parties or politicians. It is about empowering ordinary citizens and securing a government that we can all trust.
Will you join us to help end the corrosive influence of dark money in our elections?
We do not need big money to build our momentum – we need the support of strong individuals like you, who just want a voice in their own government.
Thank you for your support.
