Don't know about you, but I think it's disrepectful -- particularly to those who have sacrificed their lives for our country -- to ask for a political contribution on Memorial Day.
This e-mail -- which arrived earlier this morning -- just didn't sit right with me.
Not a word about our soldiers. Not a mention of the holiday. It's all about her birthday. (Now how strange is that?)
Dear Lucas,
You may not recognize my name, but you know my daughter -- Kay Hagan. Here she is graduating from Wake Forest University School of Law (this is one of my favorites):

Moments like that one always stick with you. To say I’m proud of how far my daughter has come since that day is an understatement.
Kay works her heart out for the people of North Carolina. And because she will fight for those families and their priorities, outside groups are spending staggering amounts of money to bring her down this year.
I know a thing or two about politics. I know that a strong, determined grassroots coalition can stand up to the big special interests. That’s what Kay is building and when I heard about her team working to raise $26,000 by her birthday, of course I wanted to do my part.
Today is Kay’s birthday. And there’s still time for you to add your $5 toward her $26,000 birthday goal. If you can, contribute before Kay’s birthday is behind us.
If you've saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately:
When I say outside groups are spending staggering amounts of money, I’m not exaggerating. Between those backed by the Koch brothers, or tied to people like Karl Rove, they’ve already spent more than $16 million trying to defeat Kay.
I know my daughter -- no one can scare her into silence or into adopting their agenda. And they can’t scare her with all that spending, either.
Let’s make this birthday one Kay will remember for a long, long time. Give $5 toward her $26,000 birthday goal.
Thank you for your support of Kay and her team.
Joe Ruthven
