GUN VIOLENCE RESEARCH?

Lucas --

Gun violence is a complex and tragic problem that's plagued our society for decades.

On average, more than 30 people die because of senseless gun violence every single day. In 2012, Illinois had the 7th highest occurrence of gun-related deaths in the country. A better understanding of the true nature of gun violence would allow us to focus on pragmatic solutions to curb gun-related deaths.

Here's my point: gun violence prevention research should be one of our nation's important priorities.

But, in 1996, Congress completely defunded any gun violence research from the CDC -- making it nearly impossible to collect unbiased data necessary to focus on pragmatic solutions.

Lucas, if we're going to be serious about preventing tragedies like in Newtown, Connecticut and Oak Creek, Wisconsin, we must give the CDC the tools it needs to understand gun violence. I'm joining my colleagues to demand Congress restore the CDC's funding for gun violence prevention research immediately. Will you join me?

We can't wait for another tragedy to happen before we take action. We must provide the CDC the resources it needs to understand gun violence, so we can take proper steps to prevent it.
