Lucas,
On Wednesday, Secretary of State John Kerry reiterated in an interview that climate change is "perhaps the world's most fearsome weapon of mass destruction."
And the most significant component of that weapon is the carbon spewing from our nation's coal-fired power plants, which emit about 2.4 billion tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) each year — roughly 40 percent of the nation's total emissions.
That's why last week, Public Citizen President Robert Weissman asked you to submit a comment to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency supporting limits on emissions from carbon burning power plants.
In case you missed his call to action, it's copied below.
I hope you will join us in this historical effort to, for the first time ever, limit the toxic carbon pollution from our nation's power plants.
Use our template comments to send an email to the EPA today. Feel free to add your own thoughts as well.
Thanks,
Allison Fisher
Public Citizen's Climate and Energy
Lucas,
We have to tell the truth about climate change.
Not to debunk the Koch Brothers-funded, Fox News-regurgitated, reality-ignoring propaganda perpetuated by climate science "skeptics."
Because "Hmm, you say two plus two is four, but I'm skeptical" pretty much debunks itself.
We have to tell the truth about climate change — and take immediate action to forestall disaster — because nothing less than our survival as a species is on the line.
And we're desperately, dangerously close to running out of time.
Here's the next step we must take right now to meet our energy demands sustainably and affordably:
Tell the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to set new limits on greenhouse gas emissions.
Mercury, arsenic, lead and many other pollutants are regulated.
But power plants can spew unlimited amounts of carbon into the air, even though carbon is the key driver of climate change!
The EPA has — at last — proposed limiting carbon emissions by any new coal and natural gas power plants built in the United States. And the agency is accepting public comments on its proposal.
This is your chance to have a say in whether we as a society take action to avert climate catastrophe while we still can.
Submit a comment to the EPA supporting limits on carbon emissions as a crucial next step in fighting climate change.
The dirty energy industries and their allies are ratcheting up a scare campaign to derail the EPA's new rule.
But a transition to cleaner energy would lower costs for consumers and generate desperately needed jobs for American workers.
Plus, there's the not-so-trifling matter of ensuring that the planet remains fit for human habitation.
For far too long, we've allowed dirty energy industries to exploit the environment and consumers. We simply can't afford to let that continue.
Take action today to set a course for avoiding climate ruin.
Thank you.
Onward,
Robert Weissman
