Fortunately, I was lucky enough to be born with a good singing voice. And that voice ultimately allowed me to have my opinions heard as well as follow my big dreams. I don't think anyone should underestimate the power of their own voice and its power to effect change.
Throughout our lives, women are constantly told where we do and don't belong. We're told we're not good enough, not pretty enough, not smart enough to follow our dreams. We're told to give up before we've even tried. But what do we have to say about this?
Whether it's on Broadway or Pennsylvania Ave., we're all still fighting for our voices to be heard.
That's why I joined EMILY's List. I'm here because I passionately believe in their work to give women the confidence, encouragement and resources they need to run for office up and down the ballot.
Women have made enormous strides over the years. We've had women explore the depths of outer space, a woman has served as Speaker of the House, and a woman was almost elected President of the United States (something I'd like to see happen one day soon).
Many consider politics as one of the last bastions of the boys' club and thankfully -- although slowly -- women are finally making real inroads.
But we still have a lot more work to do, and EMILY's List is leading the way. They're finding the women we need to run for office, telling them they can do it, and backing it up with the training and support that can close the inequality gap. If more women were in office would we still be fighting for equal wages? Or fighting just to maintain the rights to our own bodies? If there were more women in office, would the environment be suffering so much?
EMILY's List can make a difference. If I'd listened to all the people who told me along the way that I couldn't follow my dreams, who knows where I would have ended up. Thank God for EMILY's List telling girls and women that anything is possible if you have a dream or a vision of how the world should be… And that we deserve to be heard.
